Portable appliance testing is an essential part of workplace electrical safety. At FireCare, we provide thorough, efficient PAT testing services that help you meet your legal obligations and protect your employees.
Our qualified testers inspect and test all your portable electrical equipment, from office computers to workshop power tools. Every item is visually inspected and electronically tested, with clear pass/fail labels applied and a comprehensive asset register provided.
Comprehensive testing process
Our PAT testing service includes a thorough visual inspection of each appliance, checking for damage to plugs, cables, and casings. This is followed by electronic testing using calibrated equipment to check earth continuity, insulation resistance, and lead polarity.
We test all types of portable appliances including Class I and Class II equipment, extension leads, and IT equipment. Our efficient approach means we can test large numbers of items with minimal disruption to your daily operations.
Documentation & compliance
After testing, you’ll receive a full asset register listing every item tested, its unique identifier, test results, and pass/fail status. This documentation demonstrates your compliance with health and safety regulations and provides a clear record for insurance purposes.
Every tested item receives a dated pass or fail label, making it easy to identify which equipment is safe to use. We also provide recommendations on retest intervals based on the type of equipment and your working environment.

FAQs – PAT Testing
What is PAT testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of checking electrical appliances for safety through a combination of visual inspection and electronic tests. It helps identify faults that could cause electric shock or fire.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
While there is no specific law requiring PAT testing, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require that all electrical equipment in the workplace is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the most practical way to demonstrate compliance.
How often should PAT testing be done?
The frequency depends on the type of equipment and the environment it’s used in. Office equipment typically needs testing every 2-4 years, while equipment in harsher environments such as construction sites may need annual testing. We’ll advise on the right schedule for your business.
What equipment needs PAT testing?
Any portable electrical equipment that has a plug should be tested, including computers, monitors, kettles, phone chargers, power tools, extension leads, and any other plug-in devices used in the workplace.
What happens if equipment fails a PAT test?
Failed equipment is clearly labelled and taken out of service immediately. We’ll provide a detailed report explaining the fault and, where possible, advise on whether the item can be repaired or should be replaced.
